Exciting Oahu Attractions

While in downtown Honolulu visiting the Atlantis Submarine, there are many other attractions within a short distance that are worth exploring. Making the most of your day downtown by seeing some of Oahu’s other exciting sites!

The famed Waikiki Beach is practically right next door, stretching for two miles of golden sand across Oahu’s southern coast. Waikiki Beach is a happening place, and a stroll down its sandy shoreline or on the paved path that backs it is a great way to take it all in. The shoreline is packed with sunbathers, swimmers, boogie boarders, and surfers. In fact, the waves are often gentle here, so those interested in trying out surfing may consider taking a lesson in these famed waters.

At the opposite end of Waikiki Beach sits Waikiki Aquarium, and here you’ll find an up-close look at many of the ocean plants and animals that live in the surrounding Hawaiian waters. Particularly exciting is the Hawaiian Monk Seal exhibit, a creature that is found only in the Hawaiian Islands and is one of the most critically endangered species in the world. The aquarium’s Edge of the Reef exhibit introduces you to some of the fish that may be seen on a snorkeling excursion in Hawaii’s waters, perfect for those who are interested in viewing these creatures while remaining dry! Kids will also enjoy the hands-on element here.

Moving further southeast along Oahu’s coastline, you’ll reach Diamond Head State Monument, a dormant volcano that seems to loom over downtown Honolulu. The peak of Diamond Head offers stunning views of Honolulu and the Pacific for those who are able and willing to make the trek to the top! Formerly used by the military, you’ll find remnants of that use today with several old bunkers dotting the landscape. The Diamond Head hike is about 1.6 miles roundtrip. Although the length is rather short, almost the entire route is filled with stairs. Stairs, rocks, a narrow tunnel, and more stairs make up the terrain to the top. But when you’ve reached the summit, you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views! Be sure to bring along plenty of water for this hike.

After spending some time in Honolulu and Waikiki, it’s a nice breath of fresh air to retreat to the slower-paced western coast, where you can enjoy an idyllic view of Hawaii. Consider making Ko Olina your home base for your upcoming Oahu vacation!

Island Vintage Coffee

Whether you’re serious about your daily cup of joe or just in need of caffeine boost, Island Vintage Coffee serves up stellar beverages. Made from gourmet 100% Kona Coffee, beans are produced using the traditional method and roasted daily for ultimate freshness in every cup.

One thing you’ll notice after spending some time in Hawaii is the respect people have toward the land and its resources. Island Vintage Coffee is one example of maintaining a dedication to local resources, sourcing products from local growers and artisans. As well as a variety of coffee drinks, this café serves up fresh, local dishes that showcase the rich cultural diversity of the island as well as heralding Hawaii’s culinary history.

With a large variety of coffees and specialty drinks on the menu, you can order your usual or try something new at Island Vintage Coffee. Try one of the specialty drinks such as the Hawaiian Honey Latte or macadamia infused latte for something with an island flair. This is a great place to grab breakfast or lunch as well. Items are made fresh so you should expect a bit of a wait, but it is well worth it. Get your day off to a healthy start with one of their fresh acai bowls topped with tropical fruit. While you’ll find plenty of traditional items on both the breakfast and lunch menu, some options offer a surprising twist, such as the peanut butter and mango sandwich, a favorite of many. Fuel up before a day at the beach with a kona coffee and meal and Island Vintage Coffee!

Planning Your Visit

Island Vintage Coffee has multiple locations around Oahu, including one at Ko Olina Station, two in Honolulu, and one in Haleiwa. The Ko Olina location is open daily from 6am-9pm, with food being served daily from 6:30am-2pm. They are located in Kapolei at 92-1048 Olani St. #3-103C.

Activities in the Area

Pick up your morning coffee and take it to the best view on the island – one of Oahu’s gorgeous beaches! The Ko Olina ocean lagoons are located near Island Vintage Coffee at Ko Olina Station. The water along these beaches are sheltered from larger waves, making this an ideal spot to get in a morning swim. A 1.5-mile paved path connects each of the lagoons, perfect for a morning stroll or jog after getting your morning dose of caffeine from Island Vintage Coffee!

The upscale accommodations and onsite amenities at Ko Olina make this not only a great place to stay, but also an ideal base from which to enjoy day trips to other points of interest on the island. After loading up on breakfast at Island Vintage Coffee at Ko Olina Station, consider driving north along Farrington Highway to enjoy the scenery and many white sand beaches that line this route. The road follows the curve of the coastline, providing numerous stop-off points at beaches all the way up the western coast. To experience the beauty and solitude of one of the island’s more secluded beaches, consider spending some time at Makua Beach. This quiet stretch of golden sand provides beautiful views of both the ocean and the mountains, with the Makaha Mountain ridgelines meeting the shore at the beach’s northern end.

Continuing past Makua Beach, the road dead-ends at Ka’ena Point State Park, where the land becomes too rugged to be crossed by vehicle. At this point the only option is to retrace your route or to continue enjoying the rugged scenery on foot. The Ka’ena Point Trail continues to follow the coastline, taking hikers through coastal sand dune habitats and offering magnificent views of the ocean, rugged sea cliffs, whales (in season), seabirds, and native plants.

The beauty of the Ko Olina area is that it provides easy access to a variety of island experiences. While heading north from Island Vintage Coffee’s Ko Olina Station provides a remote, scenic experience, it’s just as easy to hop on the H1 and head east to downtown Honolulu and Waikiki. Here, you can enjoy a full day of shopping and dining in the bustling city. Make a stop at the Pearl Harbor Historic Sites and spend some time at the famed beaches of Waikiki before returning to your tropical getaway on the island’s west coast!

Transportation FAQ

What is the most convenient way to get around the island?

The most convenient way to navigate Oahu is by renting a car. This provides flexibility to explore the island’s diverse attractions at your own pace. Oahu’s public transportation options are limited outside of Honolulu, making a rental car the preferred choice for convenience and efficient travel. Book your rental car ahead of time and familiarize yourself with local traffic regulations for a smooth and enjoyable experience.

What about parking?

Parking on Oahu varies, but many vacation rentals, particularly those outside Honolulu, provide designated parking spaces. Confirm parking availability with your accommodation beforehand. In more urban areas like Honolulu, street parking and paid lots are common. Be mindful of parking regulations and availability to ensure a smooth experience.

What is the most budget friendly way to get around the island?

For budget-friendly transportation on Oahu, consider utilizing TheBus, Oahu’s public bus system. With an extensive network covering the island, it offers an affordable option for exploring key destinations. Additionally, the Waikiki Trolley provides cost-effective travel within the popular Waikiki area. Both options are economical alternatives to renting a car, especially when exploring the Waikiki area.

What are some convenient vacation rental options?

Consider going outside the city for an authentic island experience. Ko Olina offers a serene setting in West Oahu with beautiful beaches and accommodations, providing a relaxing escape. Many rentals in this area boast attractive onsite amenities as well as proximity to attractions. Naked Cow Dairy Farm

One of the sacrifices of living in our beautiful paradise of Hawaii is that goods such as dairy are often shipped from the mainland, across miles and miles of the Pacific Ocean—but you can find a wonderful exception to that rule at Naked Cow Dairy Farm, the only authentic Hawaiian dairy farm here on Oahu!

Natural Dairy Delights from a Farm with Quality and Compassion

Located in Waianae on the west side of Oahu, Naked Cow Dairy Farm has been a fixture of the community since 2007. Frustrated with the industrialized dairy industry, the founder Monique van der Stroom wanted to revive the natural production standards of small family dairy farms. In a time where hormone and antibiotic treatments are more common than ever, Naked Cow Dairy eschews that notion, and all of their animals are free of such treatments. Hence the name, Naked Cow—the way mother nature meant for them to be!

The cows that their dairy products come from are well loved, and you can taste the difference in their line of gourmet creamery butters, hand-crafted artisan cheeses, and freshly made yogurt. They only utilize feed that is grown in Hawaii, such as grass, sugar cane, pineapples, macadamia nuts, as well as a number of other naturally sourced feeds. As an added bonus, the farm is more sustainable for these practices, and they actively work to scale down their carbon footprint!

A cow on a farm on Hawaii A black and white photo of a cow

If you want to learn more and enjoy an exciting evening of tasting some of the finest cheeses on the island, you can take a mozzarella cheese making class offsite at the SALT at Our Kaka’ako shopping center. For two hours, you’ll be guided through the cheese-making process with a knowledgeable expert from start to finish, and you can even take your cheese home with you at the end! After the class concludes, you get to enjoy a glass of wine and sample some of Naked Cow’s best cheeses and can purchase a few if you’d like. It’s a fantastic way to glean more information about the island, and what it takes to produce sustainable dairy goods 2,000 miles in the middle of the Pacific. If you don’t have time for the cheese making class, you can still pick up some of their products at Whole Foods to enjoy in your gorgeous rental, or maybe even on the beach with a breath-taking view!

You can reserve cheese classes online or email them at classes@nakedcowdairyhawaii.com.

The Hawaiian name of this beach is Papaoneone Beach, but it is more commonly known as Turtle Beach, named for the Sea Turtles who like to feed on the seaweed that grows on the reef here. These Sea Turtles can frequently be seen in the early morning hours just offshore. Turtle Beach is a hidden gem on Oahu’s Leeward Coast. It is not among the most popular beaches on this side of the island, but that doesn’t mean that it’s a bad beach. To the contrary, the almost white sand contrasts amazingly with the azure blue water. The ocean looks especially turquoise here for some reason; more than on many other Oahu beaches. On the south end of the beach is Mauna Lahilahi, a small mountain which provides a scenic backdrop. Two condominiums, The Hawaiian Princess and Makaha Beach Cabanas, are also located on this side of the beach.  Checkout our rentals at The Hawaiian Princess if you’d like to spend a few days on this magnificent beach. It’s easy to miss Turtle Beach while driving along Oahu’s west shore as it is not visible from the road. There is a small dirt parking area along the road and three narrow public access walkways leading to the ocean. The only thing Turtle Beach lacks is shade. So if you plan to come here for the day, bring a beach umbrella. In the winter months, the surf can get very high here and this is when swimming is too dangerous. Even in the summer months there can be a strong shorebreak and currents on this beach. A sea cave, called Ulua cave, is located offshore and is a popular scuba diving location in the summer months, with a depth of around 80 feet. As always, be careful when going into the ocean and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Turtle Beach Overview

  • Wide pocket of sand
  • Mauna Lahilahi provides a scenic backdrop on south end of the beach
  • Snorkeling can be good when the ocean is calm (usually in the summer months)
  • High surf and strong currents in the winter (November to February)
  • Steep shorebreak and strong undertow in nearshore waters (can occur year-round)

This nature preserve is teeming with fish, and due to its popularity as a snorkel destination, the fish here aren’t bothered by human visitors. After easily entering into the calm, shallow water from the sandy shoreline, it’s just a short distance before the sandy bottom gives way to coral reef. Stay close to the shoreline or explore further into the bay, where tropical fish surround.

For those who would prefer a more guided excursion, Oahu is home to many boat charter companies that offer offshore snorkeling and scuba adventures. While there are many companies that offer Scuba adventures, Oahu Diving is a particularly good option for beginners. With Oahu Diving, there’s no need to go through extensive courses before getting your chance to explore the underwater world. Rather than the swimming pool, your classroom will be the ocean itself, surrounded by tropical fish, octopus, rays, and turtles. For experienced divers, the options are more varied, with reef and wall dives and an 80- to 120-foot wreck dive. Lounge on the tranquil shores of the Ko Olina lagoons, explore the vast stretch of white sand in Makaha, or venture even further off the beaten path to Keawaula Beach, with its untouched coastline and beautiful mountain backdrop. Waikiki offers a cosmopolitan vibe and lots of activities along its shoreline, while the waves on North Shore beaches such as Ehukai Beach Park and Sunset Beach bring surfers from around the world that are a thrill to watch!

Watch the Sunset

With evenings being noticeably cooler during winter months, winter in Oahu brings the best of both worlds – warm, sunny days with evenings that bring respite from the heat. Bring along a sweatshirt for cool evenings on the beach so that you can stay until the last rays of light have faded below the horizon. Sunsets in Hawaii are magical, and you’ll want to be sure to make watching the sun dip below the horizon part of your nightly routine. The palm fringed lagoons at Ko Olina make for an epic sunset viewing location, with the vibrant colors of the sky reflecting off the calm lagoon waters. To enjoy a sunset away from the beachfront, consider heading up to Puu Ualakaa State Park. Here a wide swath of grass offers panoramic views over Honolulu reaching all the way to the water’s edge, providing memorable sunset views. If this sounds great, we offer Ko Olina rentals that are perfect for the occasion!

Go Whale Watching

Winter in Oahu coincides with whale season in Hawaii, as humpbacks escape the cold of Alaska in favor of tropical waters. While it is possible to spot some from shore on occasion, these gentle giants are best observed from the water. A variety of charter companies offer whale watching excursions that will provide beautiful views of the island from a different vantage point, as well as offer the chance to see these creatures up close. Ko Olina Ocean Adventures offers a variety of boat tours that focus on seeing dolphins and whales. Another highly regarded option is Star of Honolulu, which offers a cruise-style experience.

Get in the Festive Spirit

It won’t be a white Christmas in Hawaii, but celebrating the holidays in paradise exudes its own special charm. Palm trees lit with twinkling lights, Santa rowing in to the beach aboard an outrigger canoe, and an abundance of Made in Hawaii craft fairs popping up that are perfect for gift-giving all serve to keep you in the holiday spirit. Whether you’re opening presents on Christmas morning or ringing in the New Year right on the beach, celebrating the holidays is extra special on Oahu.

To really set the stage for your Christmas in Oahu, consider a stop at Helemano Farms. You may be surprised to discover that homegrown Christmas trees are even available in the Islands! This family owned and operated business provides residents and visitors the quintessential Christmas farm experience that is a special part of so many holiday memories. It may feel a bit surreal to wander the rows of neatly planted Norfolk Pines, Leyland Cypress, and Murray Cypress trees, capturing treasured family photos as you look for the perfect tree. Whether you select a tree to serve as the backdrop for Christmas morning or you simply come for the experience, a trip to Helemano Farms adds to the charm of Christmas in Oahu!

Watch Epic Surfing on Oahu’s North Shore

Winter months bring large swells to Oahu’s North Shore, drawing surfers from around the world. The waves are so ideal that one of the largest surfing competitions in the world, the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, is held here. While it’s not the time for amateur surfers to try their hand at the sport, a visit to Oahu’s North Shore during a big swell is an unforgettable experience for spectators. If your visit doesn’t fall during an event such as the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, there is still plenty of action to view from North Shore beaches such as Sunset Beach. On days with big swells, locals come out in droves and their skills are well worth watching from the safety of the shoreline! If the inspiration strikes, Oahu’s South Shore beaches offer a much calmer location for beginners to learn during winter months.

Spend day one unwinding on West Oahu’s pristine beaches. Ko Olina boasts several lagoons with calm waters, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. Indulge in a beachside picnic or enjoy a refreshing drink at one of the oceanfront bars. As the sun sets, take a leisurely stroll along the path that fronts the lagoons and savor the breathtaking views.

Day 2: Visit the Polynesian Cultural Center

Immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture with a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center, a destination that appeals to all ages. The center showcases the traditions, arts, and customs of Polynesia through interactive exhibits, authentic performances, and hands-on activities. Explore six distinct Polynesian villages, each representing a different island or region. Immerse yourself in the vibrant dances, traditional music, and ancient rituals of Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Tahiti, Hawaii, and Aotearoa (New Zealand). The Polynesian Cultural Center offers a variety of cultural activities and experiences, such as learning traditional crafts, trying your hand at spear throwing, or participating in a canoe ride. Linger into the evening to indulge in a delicious luau feast, showcasing the diverse flavors of Polynesian cuisine.

Day 3: Take a Surfing Lesson

While renting boards and giving surfing a try on your own is a possibility, booking a lesson offers a better chance of your first time in the waves being an enjoyable one. Consider booking a lesson away from the crowds of Waikiki, where you will be able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and true island surfing vibes. A lesson with a professional instructor ensures a safe and enjoyable experience. A surf instructor will guide you through the basics, teach you proper techniques, and provide valuable tips to help you catch your first wave or improve your surfing abilities. Spend the morning catching thrilling waves and the afternoon soaking up a hard-earned lounge along the shoreline! For surf inspiration, consider heading to the North Shore to catch sight of big-wave surfers. The Hurley Pro Sunset Beach is held in the fall and kicks off the big wave surf competitions that bring in surfers from around the world.

Day 4: Snorkeling and Dolphin Watching

Immerse yourself in Hawaii’s diverse water world with a boating adventure that includes both snorkeling and wildlife watching. Boating excursions can be easily booked from the Ko Olina Marina. From your offshore location, dive into the crystal-clear waters and explore the colorful underwater world, encountering tropical fish and sea turtles. Along the journey, keep an eye out for spinner dolphins, which are often spotted playing and leaping out of the water in the area.

Day 5: Hike to Ka’ena Point and Sunset Watching

Embark on a scenic hike to Ka’ena Point, a remote and rugged coastline on the westernmost tip of Oahu. The trail offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the opportunity to spot seabirds, Hawaiian monk seals, and even whales during the late fall season. Once you’ve reached the point, enjoy the breathtaking sunset as it paints the sky in vibrant hues. Remember to bring snacks and water to make the most of your time at this tranquil and picturesque location.

Day 6: Golfing at Ko Olina Golf Club

For golf enthusiasts, spending a day at the world-class Ko Olina Golf Club is rewarding both in the spectacular views and the world-class quality of the course. This challenging course offers breathtaking views of the ocean and lush landscapes. Tee off amidst the tropical surroundings and enjoy a round of golf in paradise. Afterward, relax at the club’s beautiful open-air clubhouse and treat yourself to a delicious meal while relishing the serene ambiance.

Day 7: Visit Pearl Harbor Historic Sights

Pearl Harbor holds significant historical and cultural significance, and exploring its sights offers a unique opportunity to delve into the country’s past. Visiting Pearl Harbor during the fall season offers a less crowded and more reflective atmosphere, allowing for a more contemplative experience. It is a chance to honor the bravery and sacrifice of those who served and to gain a greater appreciation for the resilience of the American spirit.
